Collection

Books are sourced locally across Edinburgh and now are largely collected from primary schools whose libraries are being weeded. This provides Books For Guyana with a great range of age-appropriate fiction and non-fiction books to support our projects.

Transport

All the donated books are packed carefully into barrels, along with teaching and learning resources. The barrels are shipped across the Atlantic to Guyana and then flown into remote hinterland communities where access to learning materials are very limited.

Arrival

The barrels are rolled by locals from the plane to their new home. Before they are included in the library all the books are sorted, labelled and shelved. Then the new cohort is freely available for the local children and wider community to read and borrow.

Engagement

Library sessions during school lunchtimes encourage collective reading, collaborative learning experiences, and drive curiosity. Learning resources and library-based activities also support creativity and teamwork as children of all ages support one another in their learning.

Transport

Once delivered, books are shared

among children, encouraging

reading together, learning from

one another, and building a sense

of community through stories.

Arrival

The books form the foundation of

a local library created with and for

the children giving them a safe,

shared space where learning is

always accessible.

Engaging

Access to books supports literacy,

confidence, and curiosity. It helps

children stay in education, imagine new futures, and strengthens their

right to learn.
